A Big Jersey Welcome & Invitation from Frank Vignola

Frank Vignola invites you to Big Jersey Guitar Camp!

Hello: I hope you will join some Friends & I for a 5 day Intensive Gypsy-Jazz guitar camp at our flagship location in New Jersey!

This is a rare opportunity to learn from and listen to, and play and perform with two of the greatest living guitar players working in the gypsy jazz form: John Jorgenson, and Joscho Stephan.

All levels are welcome, including beginner, intermediate & advanced.

You can expect your own playing to improve as you spend the time immersed in music. Daily ensemble classes, masterclasses, playing & performing with the instructors, as well as informal jams with other campers keep everyone busy and having a great time.

Enjoy fresh, delicious food at the family-run restaurant on site, including house-made pastas, breads & pastries, modern Italian cuisine, fresh wines & more (Cucina Calandra).

Camp is a blast! Many of our campers return regularly to continue their musical journey with the friends they have made at camp. I hope to see YOU at camp!

Big Jersey Gypsy Jazz Guitar Camp 2024 Instructors

  • Frank Vignola

Frank Vignola is one of the most extraordinary guitarists performing before the public today. His stunning virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world’s top musicians, including Ringo Starr, Madonna, Donald Fagen, Lionel Hampton, Tommy Emmanuel, John Lewis, the Boston Pops, the New York Pops, and guitar legend Les Paul, who named Vignola to his “Five Most Admired Guitarists List” for the Wall Street Journal. In 2020, Frank introduced the Big Jersey Guitar Club offering multiple formats for studying guitar with him online including 10-week Learning Clubs™, and Let’s Practice Sessions, plus Song Intensives and Methods.

  • John Jorgenson

John Jorgenson, born July 6, 1956, in Madison, Wisconsin, is perhaps best known for his guitar work with bands such as the Desert Rose Band and The Hellecasters. Jorgenson is also proficient in the mandolin, mandocello, Dobro, pedal steel, piano, upright bass, clarinet, bassoon, and saxophone. John Jorgenson, known for his blistering guitar and mandolin licks and mastery of a broad musical palette, has earned a reputation as a world-class musician, as evidenced by his collaborations with Earl Scruggs, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John, Luciano Pavarotti, Bob Dylan and many others.

2010 marked the 100th birthday of the great gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt. Since discovering Django in 1979, Jorgenson has become “the US Ambassador of Gypsy Jazz” which is quite an honor given the distinctly European slant of the music’s heritage. Over the years Jorgenson has continued to honor the legacy of Reinhardt by bringing his unique brand of Gypsy Jazz to the masses with his John Jorgenson Quintet.

Jorgenson continues to expand his dynamic range of musical offerings, exploring new elements of world music, bluegrass, rock and classical as he captivates and enlightens fellow musicians and listeners along the way. Touring with multiple musical configurations such as the John Jorgenson Quintet, the John Jorgenson Electric Band, the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band and the Desert Rose Band. Jorgenson annually plays dates across the U.S. and Europe. Each permutation allows him to make prodigious use of his mastery of many instruments; no matter which band Jorgenson is playing with, his brilliant guitar work leads the way with music that is a combination of groundbreaking playing full of soaring melodies and driving rhythms.

  • Joscho Stephan

His roots lie in Gypsy Swing music, the style pioneered in the 1930s by the legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Joscho Stephan has not merely absorbed this music, but also interprets it on the highest level and is actively engaged in extending its boundaries. Despite his young age, after four highly acclaimed CDs and a DVD he has played his way into the illustrious circle of the finest Gipsy Swing musicians in the world.

Great jazz musicians such as Paquito de Rivera, James Carter, Charlie Mariano or Grady Tate enthusiastically praised the talented newcomer after performing together. He has toured Australia with top guitarists Martin Taylor and Tommy Emmanuel and has performed with his own bands (trio to quintet) on numerous important European festivals (among others in Slovenia, Italy, France, Poland and the UK).

His concert appearances in New York’s Lincoln Center or the American country capital Nashville were equally well-received, as were his performances in the New Yorker jazz shrine Birdland.

Across the board, the press only has good things to say about Joscho Stephan. His debut “Swinging Strings” was named CD of the month by American magazine Guitar Player. In the words of the highly regarded Acoustic Guitar Magazine, he is the guarantor for the future of Gypsy jazz guitar.

  • Gary Mazzaroppi

Bassist Gary Mazzaroppi is a veteran virtuoso who enjoyed a long-running association with the late great guitar innovator and raconteur Les Paul. Mazzaroppi has accompanied jazz giants from across the spectrum, ranging from vintage greats Lionel Hampton and Clark Terry, Marian McPartland, Red Norvo & Stan Getz, to fusionists Bela Fleck and Chuck Mangione, and, even Willie Nelson, in his songbook excursions. In addition to his busy playing career, Gary is also in the faculty of the Brookdale Community College School of Music, in Lincroft, NJ

  • Doug Munro

Master musician and guitar virtuoso Doug Munro is an established veteran of the New York music scene. Since 1987 he has released 19 albums as a leader and has appeared on over 75 recordings as a sideman, producer, and arranger working with a diverse array of artists including Dr. John, Michael Brecker, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. Doug has over 75 original published compositions and over 300 recorded arrangements performed by some of the finest players in the world. He has released recordings in many jazz styles including: Soul-Jazz, Organ Trio, Latin and Gypsy Jazz.

Doug’s latest release with his postmodern swing group, La Pompe Attack is called “Putt Lake Toodleloo”. It's a certified #1 chart topping hit and features guitarists, Vinny Raniolo, Ted Gottsegen, Ben Wood and Ernesto Pugliese along with saxophonist Albert Rivera, bassist Michael Goetz and drummers Ian Carroll and Jon Doty.

In the recording field Doug has received two Grammy nominations and two NAIRD awards. Amazon.com picked Boogaloo to Beck , on which Doug performed, arranged, and co-produced, as one of its Top Ten Jazz CD’s of 2003. Doug also did orchestration work on the Oscar winning documentary When We Were Kings. In 2011 “A Very Gypsy Christmas “ was picked as one of the top five holiday releases by the Wall Street Journal.

Doug has written 4 books on jazz improvisation for Alfred Music Publications, including “Swing to Bebop”, which won the Music and Sound Retailers instructional book of the year award in 2000.

As an educator Doug created and was Director of the Jazz Studies Program at The Conservatory of Music at Purchase College from 1993-2002. He continues to teach there as Director Emeritus. This esteemed jazz program boasts a faculty that includes John Abercrombie, Todd Coolman, Jon Faddis, Eric Alexander, John Riley and many other top jazz performers.

  • Vinny Raniolo

As a touring guitar musician, performer, and educator, Vinny Raniolo is best known for his accompanying skills and is a very high demand rhythm guitarist. His dynamic playing has brought him to 14 countries on three continents – and still growing – having performed in some of the world’s most illustrious venues, including the Sydney Opera House in Australia, The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, New York’s Lincoln Center and the world’s oldest indoor concert hall, Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, Italy.

While keeping a busy touring schedule in a variety of musical settings, Vinny has also become a familiar figure on Public Television. Featured previously on three popular shows, including the heavily programmed Tommy Emmanuel and Friends, in Frank Vignola’s Four Generations of Guitar as the youngest generation in the lineage of jazz guitarists with veteran Bucky Pizzarelli and in the Music Gone Public series.

Recording credits include soundtracks for HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and Woody Allen’s film Café Society.

  • Ken Smith

Ken Smith was born in Florida, USA and grew up in New Jersey and Abu Dhabi. Ken’s musical education includes a B.M. in Performance from Arizona State University. While living in Arizona, Ken worked as a soloist and ensemble member, playing everything from solo classical guitar to theater productions. Ken also began teaching the guitar at this time, creating a unique approach to applying the language of jazz to the fretboard. Since moving to New York City in 1997, Ken has performed and toured in the US, Asia and Europe, as a side man and leader. Ken is a member of Frank Vignola’s Birdland Guitar Band. Ken is currently developing a suite of educational products that document his unique approach to teaching jazz guitar.

Like any language, Music lives…

…in conversations between and among the people who “speak the language”.  Jazz music in particular, with its emphasis on interplay, really is a kind is a language and it is fostered & developed in musical conversations. So we do a lot of playing at camp: much less talking about music and much more doing music.

And, just as there is accelerated learning when you are immersed in a foreign language and speak it rather than your native languages, we use the immersion theory at camp to aim to keep everyone busy and immersed in making music.

Camp participants will be part of rotating, instructor-led small ensembles and will do a deep dive into the selected music through intensive, structured jamming and in nightly performances with your fellow campers and instructors. Master classes give an instructor a chance to explore a certain topic or theme in a more traditional manner in addition to the ensemble classes.

As always, the Big Jersey Guitar Camp is proud to create a safe and supportive environment where beginners are welcome, yet intermediate to advanced students will be stretched.
